Sphingidae of Argentina

Santa Fe Provincial Checklists

Hyles lineata fifth instar, near San Guillermo City, Santa Fe, Argentina,
on Alternanthera pungens, December 29, 2009, courtesy of Agustin Sinde, via Jorge Frana.

As of October 2007, this list has been confirmed by the L.O.L.A. publication Hawkmoths of Argentina, More, Kitching and Cocucci, 2005.

Many thanks to Agustin Sinde and Jorge E. Frana who provided the image and data for Hyles lineata. This species has been previously reported in northwestern Argentina, but the occurence in Sante Fe Province represents an eastward range extension not reported in the L.O.L.A. publication cited above. I suspect there will be other additions for Santa Fe.

Jorge Frana writes, "The appropiate locations of the larvae found on border of field crops (soybeans and sorghum) were at 30°20'30.36S & 61°56'05.9W East of San Guillermo city, and the other close to Arrufo city were at 30°16'48.09S & 61°47'08.13W. Larvae always were found on plants of Alternanthera pungens (Amaranthaceae) and never were found on the mentioned crops close by."

Many thanks also to Ezequiel Bustos who has sent me (July, 2017) an addition for Corrientes, based on his tireless research into Argentina Sphingidae ranges.
