In Central America Protambulyx goeldi flies in
southern Nicaragua: Zelaya, Rio San Juan; and
Costa Rica: Heredia, Lemon, San Jose; and it
probably flies in Panama.

The hindwing upperside of goeldii has a straighter distal edge and a less curved antemedian line. The median line is absent, and the submarginal line less dentate, compared to astygonus.
P. goeldii also has a more elongated, dark basal patch, emanating from the inner margin, compared to similar species.
